Pinoy masters move to third round

EFREN “Bata” Reyes and eight other Filipino cuemasters continue their stellar run and barged into the third round of the US 9-Ball Open in Chesapeake unscathed.

However, for four of the biggest names, a countryman looms as a stumbling block in the fifth round, should they win their fourth round match.

According to the online results posted at Azbilliards.com Reyes, the 1999 World 9-Ball Champion and 2004 World 8-Ball champion, survived a tough 11-10 match against Marc Vidal and will meet Alessandro Torrenti, who defeated Dave Boliman, 11-5.

Reigning World 9-Ball king, Ronato Alcano, who is himself a World 8-Ball champion, defeated Paddy McLaughlin, 11-3, to arrange a fourth-round match with Dan Louie.

Should Alcano and Reyes win their matches, the two Pinoy greats will duke it out in the fifth round with the loser getting through the One-Loss side.

Reyes good friend and fellow World Cup of Pool campaigner Francisco Bustamante, also defeated Richie Orem, 11-5, to arrange a meeting with Joely Gray.

In the other side of the draw, Jose Parica defated Abdullah El Yousef, 11-5 and will meet Derek Leonard.

The winner in the Parica vs. Leonard match will play the winner of the Bustamante vs. Orem game.

Should Alcano and Reyes win their matches, the two Pinoy greats will duke it out in the fifth round with the loser getting through the One-Loss side.

Meanwhile, another former World 9-Ball king, Alex Pagulayan, scored the most lopsided win of the day, 11-0, against Frank Alvarez. Pagulayan will face Louis Ulrich, who defeated former US Open champion Jeremy Jones, 11-5.

Money game king

The country’s acknowledged money game king, Dennis Orcollo also moved to the next round opposinte David Hunt after defeating Michael Dechiane, while Rodolfo Luat defeated Ivalyo Petrov, 11-8. Luat will face Ceri Worts in the next round after Worts ousted five-time US Open champion Earl Strickland, 11-7.

Lee Van Corteza also moved to the next round opposite Neils FEijen after defeating Jason Klat, 11-9, while Warren Kiamco defeated Daniel Madden, 11-4 and will meet Dan Louie. (ML)
