Friday, October 19, 2007 US sailors donate toys to DSWD
SAILORS from USS Chosin donated toys and supplies for children to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7.
The donations included stuffed toys, used clothing, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, toiletries, school and office supplies, baby cribs, as well as sports and medical equipment.
The donation, which amounted to almost P100,000, is intended for the clients of the different centers and institutions managed and maintained by the DSWD 7.
The sailors from the United States arrived recently at the Port of Cebu and brought the boxes and bags of toys and supplies for distribution and also to conduct outreach programs for the underprivileged.
The ships chaplain, Lt. Cory Thornton, said the ship’s crew also put in about 1,000 hours of manual labor to build houses at the Gawad Kalinga Village.
Present during the turnover to accept the donations were DSWD 7 Assistant Director Evelyn Macapobre and Management Division Chief Marcial Fernandez.
