Saturday, October 20, 2007 Speak out: Remembering SK’s purpose By Kid Villacarillo BJCO, Bry. T. Padilla Cebu City
MANY suggestions were considered that the Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) should now be abolished since it has long been involved in countless frailties and failures. It should be remembered that the SK was created for the purpose of inculcating among the young patriotism and responsibility, hopeful that in the coming days the nation will give birth to brilliant and good political leaders. But perhaps due to the fact attributed to their young age and much divided attention it would seem that the running of such office is but child’s play, and at the expense of the taxpayers money taken from its allocated share from the internal revenue allotment, the same are poured to some unrelated activities such as the much publicized news of some pleasure trip to Baguio City involving SK officers.
It would have been different had these young leaders were properly provided with lawful and moral guidance coming from a responsible government or nongovernment sector, pointing to them the very essence as to why the SK in the first place was created, and ensuring that the SK as an office should only strengthen the declining public faith on the government. I believe that the responsibility should first come from the barangay level more particularly from barangay councilmen handling the education committee.
I have here a suggestion to all SK chairman that they better use their funds on some useful and legitimate activities and at the same time enjoy the same with equal youthful enthusiasm, such as the purchasing of some educational books, dictionary, or perhaps scrabble sets to be made available to all their young constituents. Or even perhaps sponsoring an inter-barangay scrabble competition. In this way I believe that not only will it be educational but likewise enjoyable to our youths and would divert them from engaging into some undesirable activities. Much assured by doing this you will have all the support of and appreciation from the general public.
