Yapha kin try luck in polls; bid on despite confinement

CHILDREN and relatives of prominent politicians are among those who are vying for a post in the coming barangay and SK elections.

One of them is Jephthah Yapha, the 17-year-old daughter of Pinamungajan Vice Mayor Jeffrey Yapha and granddaughter of former congressman Antonio Yapha and former Provincial Board Member (PB) Estrella Yapha.

Jeffrey was Pinamungajan mayor for three terms. His sister Geraldine is the incumbent mayor.

Antonio, on the other hand, served three terms as congressman of Cebu’s third district while Estrella also finished three terms as PB member.

Antonio ran for governor in the May 2007 elections but lost to Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia by almost half a million votes. Estrella ran for congress but lost to Pablo John Garcia, Gwendolyn’s brother.

Jephthah, a freshman nursing student, is running uncontested for SK chairmanship of Barangay Poblacion.

Also, Antonio’s 67-year-old brother Rogelio is among the three aspirants for village chief of Poblacion, Pinamungajan.

He filed his certificate of candidacy last Thursday morning but suffered a stroke in the evening.

He is now confined in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Visayas Community Medical Center.

One Nida, who answered the mobile phone of Antonio when Sun.Star Cebu called, said that while Rogelio is in the ICU, he is conscious and will still push through with his candidacy.

Rogelio has been suffering from hypertension, she added. (MBG)
