Tuesday, October 23, 2007 Speak out: Abolish amusement tax By Dina Layam Aznar Road, Cebu City
FOR the first time in decades, local politicians are finally working to abolish the ever-useless amusement tax. This is a good sign because that particular tax is the main reason the Philippine movie industry is dying, why Cebu often fails to attract big-time concerts and sports events, and why our local entertainment industry is so inactive.
For the good of Cebu, I think it would be best that the entire province and all local government units should each take the initiative to kill the amusement tax. It never made anything good nor does it contribute enough to progress.
For Cebu City alone, amusement taxes comprise only 5.2 percent of the City Government’s income and, in effect, this alone justifies the reason to abolish it.
