Wednesday, October 24, 2007 2 SK bets want rivals disqualified
MINORS take elections seriously too.
At least two minors who are candidates in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections filed petitions for disqualifications against their rivals.
“Is this fair, having a candidate living in (another) barangay to run as SK chairman (in) another barangay?” asked Angelica Samson in a letter. She is running for SK chairperson of Barangay Lanao in Daanbantayan town, Cebu.
Samson also beat the deadline yesterday for the filing of disqualification petitions before the Provincial Election Supervisor of the Commission on Election (Comelec).
She filed the petition against John Irael Greg Mantos, who is running against her for the highest SK post in Barangay Lanao.
“He (Mantos) is still an unemancipated minor and is residing with his parents at Tapilon, Daanban-tayan,” Samsong said in her petition.
Samson also gathered five signatures attesting that Mantos is from Tapilon, therefore, ineligible to run as SK chairman in Barangay Lanao.
Mary Geneves Pinili also filed a disqualification petition against two contenders in the SK chairmanship of Barangay Cambang-ug, Toledo City.
Pinili accused fellow 17-year-olds Kairyl Shain Laspoña-Abalde and Riflon Rabago Juarez of misrepresentation as candidates of Barangay Cambang-ug.
In her petition for disqualification, Pinili said Abalde lives in Barangay Media Once Portion in Toledo while Juarez resides in Barangay Das.
Pinili also had Abalde and Juarez’s neighbors sign affidavits backing her claim.
Also in Toledo City, another candidate for barangay captain in the synchronized SK and barangay elections filed a disqualification petition against a rival.
Haile Baron said Dario Surig is from Barangay Prenza, Balamban, which makes him ineligible to run as barangay captain of Sto. Niño, Toledo City.
Baron also asked some of Surig’s neighbors to file an affidavit against Surig.
Yesterday was the last day for filing of disqualification cases for the Oct. 29 elections.
Also yesterday, election supplies were delivered at the Comelec provincial office.
A bundle of forms for the SK election and 55 bundles of general instructions for the barangay election tellers and election officers arrived at past 3 p.m. yesterday. (JGA)
