Drug test for male teachers urged

A CEBU Provincial Board (PB) member wants drug testing for all male teachers.

This follows a report that a male teacher raped six students in a Moalboal high school. The teacher was said to be high on drugs.

The report reached PB Member Juan Bolo of the first district, which made him think of possible drug testing for teachers.

When asked why it should be limited to male teachers, Bolo said female teachers don’t usually take drugs.

Bolo has yet to draft the resolution, though.

Resolution

Department of Education (DepEd) Provincial Director Recaredo Borgonia declined to comment on the issue if the resolution is already in place.

But initially, he is against limiting the drug tests to males.

“Kung laki ra (If only men are tested), we might be accused of gender bias,” Borgonia told Sun.Star Cebu.

He suggested a 100 percent drug testing among teachers or a random one.

“Who will shoulder the expenses?” Borgonia added.

Bolo said DepEd can shoulder it, but if it does not have the budget, then the drug testing expense could be referred to the school board.

Welcome

Borgonia said he would welcome that.

Both Bolo and Borgonia have yet to confirm the rape, though.

Borgonia said he has tasked the DepEd supervisor assigned in the southern Cebu town to look into the police report.

The report that reached Bolo was that a male teacher in a school in a mountain barangay in Moalboal allegedly raped six female students last week.

The students were also allegedly warned to keep their mouths shut about the incident. (JGA)
