Boxers’ reality TV show ‘Idol’ to start soon

AFTER months of planning and searching, the quest for the next boxing hero, a reality boxing show titled “Idolo” of ABS-CBN, will officially start with 16 matches slated on its first week.

“Idolo” brainchild, Antonio Lopez Aldeguer, told Sun.Star-Cebu that there will be 32 aspirants vying for four division titles and one ultimate Idolo crown.

“There will be an elimination round, a semifinal round and a championship. So there will be four division titles at stake, but there will be only one Idolo to emerge,” Aldeguer said last night.

The 32 contestants come from Visayas and Mindanao and are now housed at the ALA Gym waiting for this life-altering big night.

“Of the 32, only 16 will be left, then eight and then the four champions. But the people will have their say in this one. Because 50 percent of the criteria will be from the text votes while the remaining 50 will come from our assessment. That is where our Idolo will be named,” Aldeguer added.

The winner of each fight have no assurance of staying, “that depends on his performance. If the winner won just by running around and hitting occasionally then the text votes and our assessment will prevail. And the losing fighter who had the better performance will be recalled,” Aldeguer said.

All the 32 aspirants had already passed the medical and physical exams while fighters who still had no license are now filing for one with the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

ABS-CBN has started working with the ALA Gym and SGG Promotion for this project, which is aimed to discover the next boxing hero.

However, the project is only limited to Visayas and Mindanao fighters who had no or little professional fight experience.

Dennis Cañete, the vice president for promotions of the ALA Gym, announced that the formal launching of the ‘Idolo’ will be on Friday. (RCM)
