Chiongbian: 7th Island Tee entices golfers with 2 Class Cs
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

THE 7th Island Tee of Mactan Island Golf Club (MIGC) is coming up in less than two weeks, Nov. 8-11. Don’t forget to sign up for this very popular tournament that is designed to give your money back via giveaways and prizes. The only tournament in the world that has two class Cs! Why two class Cs? Because the descriptions of winners are A for alligator, B for buaya and C for crocodile, and D players want to be in and win it too!

The tournament is 18 holes, two-man team play, modified Stableford and full handicap. There’s a no-holds-barred combination of partnerships: member-member, member-guest or guest-guest. If you have a handicap and a golfing partner, go ahead, sign up and join the fun. Registration fee is P2,500 that includes caddie fees, giveaways, raffles and awards dinner at Casino Filipino Waterfront Mactan on Nov. 11, 6 p.m.

Players are divided into five divisions: Class A (0 -12), Class B (13 – 19), Class C1 (20 – 24), Class C2 (25 and Above) and Senior (61 yrs and above).

The average handicap is used to determine your division. The team with the highest points wins the overall crown. There will be a class champion, first and second runners up in Class A, B, C1, C2 and Senior.

The amiable hard working GM Joya says the golf course is in top shape but don’t you worry, he will make you earn your score by using back tees. And sensitive to back tees are all the Par 3s, which are very difficult with water hazards in front and if you go over the green, that spells disaster too.

A tee shot from the world’s most unique Par 3 and MIGC’s signature island green is like trying to land a helicopter on a small helipad with lots of sheer winds. The best advice on this hole is to go for a bogey by laying up. Hole-in-one prizes on all Par 3’s are a Kia Carens car, a motorcycle and Honma golf set.

The Rotary Club of Banilad Metro (RCBM) plays host to the17th National Rotary Metro Sportsfest in Cebu that starts today thru Nov. 27. Aileen Soco is president of RCBM and is supported by club members Ricky Ballesteros as the over-all chairman and PE Kenneth Casquejo handling the secretariat. The opening ceremony is at 7 p.m. tonight in Teatro of Casino Filipino Lahug. Tournament venues are the City Sports Club Cebu at Ayala Business Park and the Cebu City Sports Center in Abellana HS.

This sportsfest is the biggest Inter-Rotary Club event of the “Metro” Rotary Clubs in the Philippines. Forty Rotary Metro Clubs are confirmed to attend and bring in an estimated number of 300 Rotarians and spouses. They will be competing in golf, basketball, swimming, track and field, badminton, lawn tennis, table tennis, darts,
billiards, bowling, dancesport and a poker tourney.

Next Wednesday is Halloween and the costume party at Cebu Country Club is also set on that day, Oct. 31. The party starts with cocktails at 6 p.m., with soft drinks and beers free of charge, and dinner at 7:30 p.m. There is dancing as usual, this time to the tune of the Ricochet Band.

The costume contest will have two categories; the most original and the most Halloween-inspired. Entrees are individual, couple and group (minimum six people). Wear the strangest clothes and get noticed. Invited guest can join by paying P300 for everything.

GOLF TIP. The toughest thing to do in golf is to get rid of the hand action. Everybody wants to hit the ball harder and they think the way to do it is by hitting it with the hands or flicking the wrists. When you do that, your arms slow down.

The best way to hit it farther is to speed up your arms by letting your arms swing in a circle without interfering with its swinging motion. And a circle needs a center so that means you should minimize the shifting of your weight to the back foot on the backswing and/or consciously shift it forward on the forward swing. If you force the weight shift, you will be too fast or too slow.
