Friday, October 26, 2007 Cebu Young Designers’ competition
NOVICE fashion designers of Cebu will dominate PAGCOR Cebu Teatro’s scene at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on Oct. 27, 9 p.m., for the 3rd Cebu Young Designer’s Competition.
Nolan Arnoco, Lord Maturan, Barbie Alvarez, Mark Anthony So, Harvey Cenit, Manuel Tumaque and Cyrus Velasco will showcase their collections on the competitive runway.
As a designer, Arnoco favors classic lines and stylish cuts. “I want to inject glamour in my designs,” he said. For the competition, his inspiration and working title is “Europeso,” which celebrates the convergence of European and Filipino design.
Maturan said he’d like his designs to be wearable but “edgy.” “As a designer you have to sell your vision and ensure that your creations have commercial appeal.” His collection, “Fil Noir” takes inspiration in Filipino styles rendered in dark-toned cloths.
The lone female among the contestants, Alvarez said she has high regards for Carolina Herrera as a designer, who she said exemplifies “classic and elegant” fashion. Her playful and colorful collection, “Migration,” is inspired by modern and Western influences.
So said that his designs leans more on the “sexy.” His collection, “Maranao,” so aptly entitled, is rich in color and geometric patterns.
Cenit, a Fine Arts student, is interested in combining painting and fashion. His collection, “Karaniwang Tao,” is inspired by Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings.
Tumaque’s collection, “Linyas y Figuras,” is inspired by patterns of the Tinalak, a textile woven by the ethnic group T’boli.
Velasco said that his designs are defined by simplicity and straight and classic cuts. His collection, “La Familia,” is reminiscent of Filipino clothing during the Spanish era.
