Friday, October 26, 2007 UC topnotcher gets new car
A graduate of the University of Cebu (UC) ranked first in the recent Customs Broker Licensure Examination and received the keys to a brand-new Toyota Vios 2007 model.
Albert Payusan Barliso, 22, of Talisay City, received a prize from Atty. Augusto Go, UC president, after scoring 87.50 percent in the exam given by the Professional Regulation Commission.
Last April, Go also gave a brand-new car to bar exam eighth-placer Al-Shwaid Ismael. “It is a great motivation for students to study harder,” Go saids.
Barliso topped the 227 successful examinees out of the 1,205 who took the exam.
“I was confident that I would top the board because I really prepared for it,” said Barliso, who is also a consistent dean’s lister.
Since November last year, Barliso underwent a rigorous self-review. He also took a formal review conducted by UC that started in July.
“I told myself that there are only two possibilities—either I’ll top the board exam or I’ll fail it. Topping the board exam was worth all the sacrifices,” he said.
Barliso said that he is planning to join the Bureau of Customs.
Potential
“I saw his potential to top the exam. Since last November, I gave him all the study materials to help him prepare for the exams,” said Alejandro Carin, dean of UC’s Customs Administration department.
Carin also said that Barliso’s grade upon graduation could have qualified him to graduate with honors had he not dropped his subjects on the semester he fell ill.
Barliso broke a 20-year lull by becoming UC’s first first-placer in the customs broker’s exam in 20 years, Carin said.
UC has produced graduates that made it to the top 10 in the customs broker’s exam since 2000. Last year, it produced seven topnotchers.
“His (Barliso) success becomes a challenge and an added pressure for us to maintain this feat,” said Carin. He said that, currently, he is grooming future topnotchers.
Barliso is expected to join the oath-taking ceremony on Nov. 13, at the Centennial Hall, Manila Hotel, Manila. (JSC)
