Friday, October 26, 2007 Pick God-fearing, ‘green’ candidates, DILG advises
THE Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Cebu provincial office urged the public to go out and vote.
“To vote is a rare privilege. Thus, the people should exercise it, so that they can participate in shaping the future of their communities,” DILG Provincial Director Edmundo Jamisola said in a press statement.
When you vote on Monday, he added, choose candidates who are “God-centered, people-oriented and committed to protect the environment.”
The provincial director also encouraged the public to vote for candidates who are committed to serve, with unquestionable integrity and the capacity to govern.
Jamisola also directed government operations officers in all component cities and towns to conduct an information campaign in their areas to endure a good turnout.
The Commission on Elections, in Resolution 8320, requires a barangay assembly at least once during the campaign period, where all the candidates will get equal time to explain their credentials and programs. The barangay captain or any councilor who is not a candidate is supposed to convene this assembly.
The campaign period ends tomorrow. The last time barangay elections were held was in 2002, and Monday’s exercise is only the fifth such election after Martial Law. (JGA)
