Partners Cup ’07 gets new format

TEAMS wanted exposure. Cesafi is giving it to them.

The upcoming Partners Cup promises each team of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) to be playing until they run out of steam with the kind of format that will be introduced in the Partners Cup which opens in December.

“It has been a clamor because there is a tendency for the teams to be idle in the off season and this is one way of answering those calls,” said Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy.

According to Tiukinhoy, teams will be divided into two brackets, according to how they fared in the recently-concluded seventh Cesafi season.

Teams 1, 3, 5 and 7—University of the Visayas, University of San Jose Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and Don Bosco College (DBC) will belong to Group A. The odd teams University of San Carlos, Southwestern University, University of Cebu (UC) and Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) will make up Group B.

The teams will be playing in a round robin in their respective brackets. After this, each team will be playing for two games against each of the team in the other bracket.

After this round comes the quarterfinals as the rankings of teams 1 to 8 will be known and the No. 1 team gets an automatic semifinal slot.

In the quarterfinal, the second-ranked team will go up against the No. 5, No. 3 will play No. 6 and No. 4 will face No. 7. The higher-ranked teams will enjoy a twice to beat advantage.

“This will give our players and their corporate backers maximum exposure,” said Tiukinhoy, who had already tapped television stations for this event.

Also, to allow a competitive atmosphere, the bottom four teams can get reinforcements from their former varsity members.

USPF and UC can get the services of three former varsities, while DBC and CIT can have five former players to boost their lineup. (MCB)
