Rotary sportsfest opens today

THE 17TH National Rotary Metrosportsfest, which attracted members of 40 Rotary Metro Clubs from all over the country, will unwrap today in different venues all over the metro.

The sports festival, which is the biggest inter-Rotary sportsfest, originated in Cebu behind the efforts of then district governor Xavier Ledesma of the Rotary Club of Metro Cebu. Seventeen years later, the inter-club competition goes back home to its roots.

This year, it is being hosted by Rotary Club of Banilad Metro (RCBM) led by former president Ricky Ballesteros, who sits as the overall chairman of the organizing committee.

The golf competition already started yesterday at the Mactan Golf Course. The other events are basketball, badminton, chess, darts, table tennis and bowling, which will all be held at the different facilities of the City Sports Club Cebu at the Cebu Business Park.

Lawn tennis will be held at the Baseline Recreation Center, while athletics and swimming will be at the Cebu City Sports Center. The dancesport competition will cap the three-day festivities and will be held during the awards night on Oct. 27 at the Sunflower Disco.

Set to defend the championship crown is Rotary Club of Metro Ilo-ilo, which dominated last year’s competition in Baguio City.

Banilad, with homecourt edge, hopes to rectify their 4th place finish last year. Co-chairing Ballesteros in this year’s event is RCBM president Ailyn Grace Soco. Also seeking vengeance are teams from Rotary Club of Metro Dadiangas from General Santos City and third placer Rotary Club of Metro San Fernando of Pampanga. (MCB)
