Saturday, October 27, 2007 Council aspirant loses Capitol job
A MEMBER of the staff in the governor’s office ran for councilor of a city barangay but did not file her resignation.
Provincial Lawyer Marino Martinquilla revealed that Doris Alegado, a casual employee who has been working in the Capitol for several years, just filed for a leave of absence.
However, it was later discovered that she ran for councilor of Barangay Bulacao in Cebu City.
Martinquilla explained, though, that even without her resignation, the law states that any government employee who runs for an elective post is automatically considered resigned.
Even if she loses in this Monday’s election, she can no longer report back to work at the Capitol. “Civilian siya ug balik kon mapildi,” Martinquilla explained.
Government employees are also not allowed to campaign for any candidate.
In the May 14 elections, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia had reprimanded some employees who campaigned against her opponents.
Garcia said she is not forcing her employees to vote for her but they must also be aware that they are not allowed to campaign for any candidate.
Under Commission on Elections guidelines, the Oct. 29 barangay and youth polls are supposed to be conducted in a “non-partisan and inexpensive” manner. (MBG)
