Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Tanod fires gun, hurts 5 minors
FIVE minors, aged 16 and 17, survived gunshot wounds after a tanod of Barangay Quiot in Cebu City allegedly fired at them indiscriminately at dawn yesterday.
One of the victims was taken to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) for surgery after a slug pierced his chest and exited his back.
The four other victims were injured in their thighs and legs.
Initial investigation conducted by SPO1 Jay Yballe, chief investigator of the Homicide Section, said the incident occurred at 1 a.m. along Greenbelt Drive near Talavera Retreat House in Barangay Quiot.
Drinking
The minors were drinking at the side of the road when the suspect, identified as Martino Haincadto, arrived.
Haincadto reportedly told the minors not to run. But when some of the minors stood up and started to leave, the barangay tanod pulled out a short firearm and fired.
The first shot was aimed in the air. Then Haincadto fired the next shots indiscriminately, hitting the minors.
Haincadto fled while the victims were taken to the CCMC.
Police tried to find Haincadto but he was no longer in his residence and in other places where he could be hiding.
Yballe’s team also coordinated with Barangay Captain Vicente Ramos Jr. to help find Haincadto.
In a separate incident, a 48-year-old resident of Sitio Tubod, Barangay Pardo was shot by two neighbors at 9 p.m. last Sunday.
Waylaid
Esmeraldo O. Abadies was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for gunshot wounds in the left side of his body and elbow.
Abadies told Homicide Section investigators that he was on his way home from work when the suspects, identified as brothers Rodrigo and Ambrosio Tabora, waylaid him.
The suspects allegedly shot him using undetermined firearms.
Abadies said that two days before the incident, he tried to intervene in a quarrel between his daughter and a sister-in-law, who is a niece of the Tabora brothers.
The incident could have prompted the Tabora brothers to attack Abadies, police said. (JST)
