VSMMC docs, accuser face off in fiscal’s office

DOCTORS from the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) who have a criminal complaint for negligence resulting in homicide against them faced their accuser at the Cebu City Prosecutors Office last Friday.

Doctors Elaine Monton, Jasmine Kapunan, Helen Amorin, Clarita Alcantara, Dr. Pareno and the two medical interns named in the complaint attended the clarificatory hearing called for by Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Alex Gabud.

Complainant Joselesis Esguerra was also present.

Esguerra blamed the respondents for the death of his wife Clarissa last March 2. Clarisa died after giving birth.

Gabud gave both parties 15 days to submit their position papers.

For resolution

“After that, with or without the position papers, the complaint will be submitted for resolution,” said Gabud.

In his complaint, Esguerra accused the doctors of puncturing the large intestine of his wife during a caesarian operation. He accused the doctors of failing to properly close the cuts made on the large intestine.

The autopsy result said Clarissa died of septic shock.

The doctors denied the accusation.

Blame

In their counter-affidavits, they said Esguerra has himself to blame for the death of his wife.

The doctors said Clarissa did not take the antibiotics prescribed to counter her systemic infection.

They said it is possible that Clarisa’s lung infection developed because her husband often failed to buy antibiotics, resulting in irregular dosages. (KNT)
