Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Home, winless, but get pat on the back
CEBU City came home empty-handed in the recently-concluded 2007 University Games, which wrapped up Sunday night in Bacolod City.
University of San Carlos fielded in four teams—men’s volley, men’s and women’s basketball and football, while University of San Jose Recoletos had its lady spikers compete in the weeklong meet. All, however, ended their bids on a sour note.
The best finish for the Cebu teams is a fourth place by the USJ-R spikers, who lost to Philippine Christian University.
It was a four-setter, which head coach Grace Antigua said had not gone in vain as the experience will serve as a tune-up for the coming Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
Impressive
The USC Warriors, on the other hand, had an impressive elimination round in the basketball competition to move to the quarterfinals on top of their bracket with a clean slate. They bombed out of contention in the round of eight by a hairline.
The Warriors are the second runners up in the Cesafi basketball, where they lost to eventual champion University of the Visayas.
Their lady counterparts, on the other hand, lost their chance to fight for the title because of the quotient system. The Lady Warriors, the recently-crowned Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champions were locked in a three-way logjam with University of St. Benilde and Adamson University.
When the quotient was computed, USC Lady Warriors lost the slot to St. Benilde by a mere .6 points to relinquish the chance for the crown.
The USC men’s volleyball team, on the other hand, only managed to win one game in the elimination before they were booted out of the tournament. USC is also the defending champion in Cesafi men’s volleyball.
Confidence
USJ-R head coach Grace Antigua, a celebrated former RP team member, said that their experience would greatly help the team as it eyes to claim its third straight championship in the Cesafi.
“That experience would help us deal with our opponents in the Cesafi,” Antigua said.
Volleyball, including the rest of the auxiliary events of Cesafi—athletics, swimming, tennis, dancesport, among others—will open next month. (MCB)
