Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Island girls take long journey, win
SANTA Fe had to cross the sea, travel by land and wait for an entire day before handing Daanbantayan a two-set slaying for the cluster IV title of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyballl Cup for Women Sunday afternoon in San Remegio.
Santa Fe won the cluster title for the second straight time following its 25-18, 25-16 win over Daanbantayan, which last won the title in 2005, where they repulsed Sta. Fe in the championships. Last year, Sta. Fe claimed the title after defeating Medellin.
Santa Fe of Bantayan Island had claimed the finals slot last Saturday still when it won the subcluster competition with a clean slate. Last Sunday, they had to wait for the mainland cluster eliminations before facing their finals foe.
After waiting for an entire day, Santa Fe wasted no time in trouncing the now exhausted Daanbantayan, who played in three games prior to the final round.
Daanbantayan entered the final round with two wins and one loss, winning over San Remegio, 25-12, 18-25, 25-19 and Medellin, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22.
The team’s assault was spearheaded by Danalie Baquiro, Maria Luilyn Pacinio and Hanamae Sevilla, whose exceptional skills earned them scholarship in a university after they were discovered by a coach.
The cluster winners will receive P20,000, while their runners up will get P10,000. Both teams will play in the next round against the top teams from the other clusters.
The P100,000 top purse is to be disputed for. (MCB)
