‘Do more than lock doors, windows’

WHEN you visit cemeteries today, make sure at least one member of the family stays behind to guard the house, Lapu-Lapu City police advised.

“Occasions like these are, for criminals, a big chance to make money. Be cautious, because locked doors and windows alone cannot hold the thieves off,” Police Chief Louie Oppus told Sun.Star Cebu.

With the precinct commanders, Oppus roamed the city and visited the cemeteries in Barangays Gun-ob, Publacion and Mactan to finalize a security plan for the crowds expected today and tomorrow.

About 100 policemen, medical and traffic personnel and barangay tanods will be spread inside and around the three cemeteries. Patrol cars and members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) are on standby in case of an emergency.

“If a situation will require more manpower, we will have the sub-task forces of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO). They are not here but we can call them for help,” Oppus said.

He placed the city’s police force on heightened alert since Tuesday.

The ban on liquor, sound systems and sharp objects inside cemeteries will be strictly enforced, he added.

Visitors will be frisked and their bags inspected, to ensure safety.
