Cop trainee shoots self

A POLICEMAN on field training was taken to the Cebu City Medical Center after his firearm accidentally went off and hit him in the right leg inside the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB), yesterday.

PO1 Nap Kelly Segarra, 26, who is under the detached service at the CIIB was trying to place his Norinco .45 pistol at the holster tucked in his right waist when it went off.

Reporters

PO1 Julius Ceasar Siarez and SPO4 Eddie Cortes, who were also inside the CIIB, checked where the shot came from and found Segarra standing near a table with a gunshot wound in his leg.

CIIB Chief George Ylanan and police beat reporters who were outside and heard the shot also rushed inside to check what the explosion was all about.
Segarra was taken to the city hospital for treatment.

Minor injury

SPO4 Alex Dacua, one of the Homicide Section investigators that responded to the incident, said Segarra’s injury was minor as the slug only grazed his leg.

Dacua said the hammer of Segarra’s pistol was open and chamber-loaded when he was adjusting it, causing the accidental firing.

Segarra’s firearm with nine bullets inside was confiscated by Dacua’s team while the investigation is being conducted. An empty shell was recovered by the investigators at the scene.

Ylanan said an investigation will be conducted determine if Segarra could be held liable to any offense. (JST)
