Talk back: I laugh only
By Agustin L. Sollano Jr.

THE title of this write-up is the literal translation of the Cebuano-Visayan “katawa lang ko.”

It is in response to Padre Lando Carvajal’s column entitled, “A Funny Church.”

Confer Sun.Star Cebu, Saturday, Oct. 31, 2007, page A14.

The Roman Catholic Church, into which we were born, is indeed very funny!

The liturgy (the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacraments, etc.) used to be in Latin and the Roman Catholics were frowning upon the non-Roman Catholics who were using the vernacular.

In Padre Lando’s generation to which I also belong, Latin was gradually replaced with English and the local dialects.

Of course, the Hierarchy had their reasons for the switch. Now, the Roman Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, is gradually reintroducing Latin.

Of course, he has his reasons for doing so and we respect them.

But, isn’t it funny?

Maglinatin na man, magbinisaya na man, maglinatin na man.

According to a local radio comedian, “Rated R,” pagsure oy!

During Padre Lando’s and my time, we were allowed to accept only one stipend (pamisa) every time we offered Mass.

Now, it’s scandalous how much some priests are making every time they administer the sacraments and/or offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

How can they effectively preach about the Gospel formula for happiness: “Blessed are the poor…”

The present definition of the liturgy has some truth to it, but it is funny: “The participation of the laity in the confusion of the clergy.”

I laugh only!
