Friday, November 02, 2007 Darchinyan eyes Gorres’ weak chin; vows to down Cebuano in IBF fight
EVEN if the fight is still in the negotiation stage, the Z “The Dream” Gorres vs. Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan IBF super flyweight eliminator bout is already attracting attention and promises to be a must-see event.
When the IBF championship committee ordered the negotiation between the camps of Gorres and Darchinyan for a fight that would determine who challenges Russian champion Dimitri Kirilov, interest on the fight has snowballed.
This early, Darchinyan’s camp has already declared they already found a way to dismantle the stylish and slick punching Filipino fighter.
Angelo Hyder, the agent of the Australian IBO super-flyweight champion, said in the Australian-based website sportsnut.com, that Darchinyan already believes he could hand the Cebuano fighter his second KO loss, just like when Gorres lost by technical knockout to Edgar Rodrigo in June 2003 for the Philippine flyweight title.
Six months later, Gorres suffered a knockdown in the ninth round before surviving a split decision against Eric Barcelona six months later.
Suspicious
Hyder believes Gorres has a weak chin and that makes Darchinyan salivate with anticipation.
“Vic has to be regarded as one of the world’s best punchers pound-for-pound. Vic knows Gorres is a strong southpaw with a big punch, a bit like Vic himself. But if Gorres is suspect on the chin, Vic will find him out,” Hyder said.
However, he admitted that his ward has to be alert because Gorres also packs a strong punch.
“But he has to be careful. Gorres can also whack and he has a first round KO over Glenn Donaire, Nonito’s brother, who also fought Vic for the world flyweight title. There is so much riding on this fight with Gorres that you will see Vic give the performance of his lifetime,” he said.
Gorres lost his first bout to Rodrigo, when the Cebuano was suffering some off ring problems and also fought with an abscessed tooth. (RCM)
