Giants eye best start in Philippine Cup

MANILA - Not all roads will lead to the cemetery during All Souls Day as pacesetter Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants try to stretch their unbeaten streak to four against the Welcoat Dragons today in the resumption of the 33rd Smart-PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The Tender Juicy Giants, bearing a clean 3-0 slate, collide against the Dragons in the first game at 4:35 p.m., while Red Bull, fresh from its 95-84 triumph over Air21 on Wednesday, meet the Sta. Lucia Realtors in the feature match at 7:20 p.m.

Purefoods, which has beaten almost all the best teams in the league, is expected to encounter little trouble against the Dragons, whose only win so far was over the injury-laden Barangay Ginebra, 82-64, on Oct. 27 in Roxas City.

So vast is Purefoods’ firepower that it won its first two matches by an average margin of 11 points, beating Sta. Lucia, 96-89, on Oct. 17 and Talk ‘N Text 112-97 on Oct. 20 in Dumaguete City. It was only against Magnolia that the Giants won by just three, 93-90, on Oct. 26.

“If we are to be the best in this conference, then we have to beat all the best teams in the league to prove our worth,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio after humbling the Beverage Masters. (FCC)
