Friday, November 02, 2007 Taiwanese, Chinese take last two spots in WPC qualifiers
ONE more from Chinese-Taipei and another mainlander joined the list of 128 pool players who will be seeking to unseat defending champion Ronato Alcano in the 2007 World Pool Championship that will start this Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Dang Jin-Hu of China won Qualifying Event No.9, while Chu Hung-Ming of Chinese-Taipei topped the Qualifying event No.10 to complete the 10 qualifiers who outlasted a total field of 180 entries seeking slots to the main draw held Wednesday evening at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City.
China now has three players in the main draw with Dang joining Li He-wen and Xu Meng, while Chinese Taipei has now a total of 10 strong players aiming to bring back the world pool title back to their shores.
Aside from the two, the other players who made it from the qualifying events are Lu Hui-chan (Chinese Taipei), Kenichi Uchigaki (Japan), Ko Pin-yi (Chinese Taipei), Wu Yu-lin (Chinese Taipei), Alwi (Indonesia), Leonardo Andam (Philippines), Roberto Gomez (Philippines), Chang Yau-mau (Chinese Taipei), Dang (China) and Chu (Taipei) will start their campaign on Sunday.
Dang defeated Toru Kuribayashi of Japan, 9-5 to take Christian Reimering’s place in Group 7. Reimering of Germany, who decided to withdraw from the competition.
Compatriot
Chu, on the other hand, will be in Group 3 together with compatriot and 2005 champion Wu Chia-Ching.
Meanwhile, Alcano will open his bid to retain the title when he plays Saeed Ahmed Al-Mutawa of the United Arab Emirate, while Efren Reyes will battle against Kenichi Uchigaki on Sunday.
All players need only two wins to make it to the Round of 64 and two losses means early elimination. (RCM)
