Guv cup volleyball opens today

AFTER the lull of the past days, the island of Camotes and the municipality of Borbon will shift into a competitive atmosphere as the third Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women simultaneously resumes today in the two venues.

The cluster 5 of the competition includes municipal teams from the island of Camotes and some municipalities from the northern part of Cebu.

To cut competition time short, the eliminations of the two sub-clusters will be held simultaneously with winners facing each other on Sunday for the championship.

The teams from Camotes Island are Pilar, Poro, Tudela and San Francisco and games will be held in Pilar.

Over at the mainland, Catmon will open its defense of their cluster championship today. They will be facing home team Borbon and Sogod and Carmen.

Catmon’s confidence was boosted last year after the team lineup was beefed up by the 2006 champions of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, led by Athena Sucalit and Catherine Marquez. Both players are now with Pajo National High School. It was still not clear as of yesterday if the two players will be gearing up for their hometown.

The winning teams and their runners-up in every cluster will receive cash prizes, while earning slots to the knock out round, where they battle against other cluster winners for the P100,000 top purse.

The elimination round of the tournament will cover six legs, played in the entire province including offshore in Bantayan and Camotes islands. Cluster champions will receive P20,000 each, while the second placers will get P10,000 each. (MCB)
