Yukka up against strong Venezuelan

CEBUANO fighter Eri-berto “Yukka” Gejon is set to fight a very tough opponent in his return to the ring after losing his chance to become a world champion last September.

The 29-year-old former bemedalled amateur fighter is scheduled to fight a non-title, 10-round bout today at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan against an undefeated and youthful Roman Gonzales of Venezuela.

The fight is deemed doubly hard for highly-ranked Gejon as he still carries a shoulder injury from a fight he lost to Yutaka Niida for the WBA 105-lb. title last Sept. 1.

“Admittedly, I am not in perfect shape at this moment because I still have an injury. But I’ll just fight the best I can. I know that all the odds are against me, I’ll just try to use my reach advantage and try to win this fight,” Gejon told Sun.Star Cebu days before he left for Japan.

Gonzales is not just a typical fighter. He is groomed to become the next world champion.

Carrying a scary 14-0, record, Gonzales—the Venezuelan, WBA Fedelatin and WBA Fedecentro light-flyweight champion—also carries a knockout record of 14.

“I heard the boy can punch. I had to be cautious with that. But I can always assure you my best game. Despite my lack of training,” Gejon added.

Carrying a 23-2-1, 14 KOs record, Gejon will fighting under the 108-lb. division where he is more comfortable.

“One thing’s good in this fight, I don’t have to watch my weight,” he quickly added.

The Gejon-Gonzales bout is one of the four featured events presented by the Teiken Promotions. (RCM)
