Monday, November 12, 2007 Shaw backs out; purse bid option
IT SEEMS that Gary Shaw, the promoter of Vic Darchinyan, is not as enthusiastic to promote his fighter as earlier reported.
Shaw backed out of his commitment to promote the Darchinyan-Z Gorres IBF super-flyweight eliminator bout, forcing the boxing body to order purse bid, which will likely be participated by the handlers of both fighters.
“It is true. (Gary) Shaw had backed out and IBF ordered a purse bid,” ALA gym mentor and boxing patron Antonio Lopez Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Shaw beat the Nov. 8 deadline for negotiations and had scheduled to put the match underneath the Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez fight in March 1 in the US.
“We had already agreed to the conditions and we agreed to fight in the US. There was nothing left for us to disagree, but here it is–they’ve backed out and we will be undergoing a purse bid,” added Aldeguer.
Australian sports website, sportsnut.com, reported that Darchinyan’s manager Elias Nasser is willing to bankroll the match and to have it staged in Sydney.
“We’ll I guess, they’re right. They have the money. But honestly we don’t want to fight in Australia but we just hope that there will be something good to happen in the few days,” Aldeguer said of Nasser’s statement.
With Shaw out, Gorres promoter Golden Boy Promotions is the last hope of the Filipino fighter to have the fight in a neutral country.
The fight, which would determine who will match IBF 115-lb. champion Dimitri Kirilov, is going one-sided on Gorres.
Although Darchinyan has the power, his defense is in question and Gorres, who is exceptionally gifted with technical skills and quickness, will make the “Raging Bull” a moving punching target all fight long.
Besides, Gorres is hungry enough to devour Darchinyan after his controversial split decision defeat to Fernando Montiel last February.
“We will just wait for any development in the coming days. We will try to evaluate things now that the fight is in our hands (with Darchinyan’s camp). It is not cheap if you go to a purse bidding, just like we went through when we bid for the Montiel fight,” Aldeguer said. (RCM)
