Tuesday, November 13, 2007 Speak out: Fight for women’s rights continue By Alvin John Tan
I WOULD like to commend Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia for walking out of the bikini show at the Boljoon fiesta.
To millions of Filipino women who deserve respect, our governor stood up against the “normal” and “modern” ways of the world despite what our local television noon time shows preach to our youth and all Filipino women, which is to dance and wear skimpy bikinis.
It is about time that we realize that one of the problems we face today, which affects our economy and attitude as a nation, is that we have a male chauvinist problem.
Our Filipino men tend to think they are superior to women. In fact, majority of our men are lazy, drunk and extremely violent. Our women, on the other hand, are more educated, skilled, patient and hardworking. They also fall victims to become martyrs for the men in their lives.
Our men are dependent and irresponsible, unaware of the sufferings our women bear not only at home but everywhere in the world.
In the future, I would like to see more men coming home after work to do the laundry, cook, wash the dishes and clean the house, instead of kicking his shoes to lie on the sofa with a remote control on one hand or having a drink with his barkada while his wife makes polotan.
May the fight for women’s rights and awareness continue. May our women earn more respect.
