Friday, November 16, 2007 Brgy. Pulangbato folks get access to potable water from PWRI project
MORE than 500 households in Barangay Pulangbato, Cebu City now have access to potable water.
This, after the Lhuillier-led Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. (PWRI) set up a P2-million water clarification, filtration and disinfection system in the area.
PWRI supplies around 100 cubic meters of potable water a day to each household-subscriber in Barangay Pulangbato. It also supplies water in bulk to a cooperative that, in turn, distributes the supply to its more than a hundred members in the low-lying parts of the barangay.
The system is the first of its kind in Far East Asia, said PWRI president Antonio Tompar.
He said the facility processes and converts surface water coming from a “semi-man-made, semi-natural lake” that was formed during quarrying activities in the area earlier.
“The place, where the lake is located, used to be a quarry area. As the area deepened due to the excavation, water started coming out from a spring that was exposed due to the digging. The digging stopped when the water filled the place,” said Tompar.
PWRI has also intensified its missionary bulk water supply treatment projects in Mindanao.
The company has set up clarification, filtration and disinfection system in Tagoloan and Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. The system treats the surface water of rivers in the areas, making the water potable.
“The need for water in these towns is immediate, yet they are not served,” Tompar said, adding that PWRI will continue to look for potential markets all over the country.
“We can’t guarantee a problem-free operation. But as of now, we are able to supply the residents with water, 24/7 (24 hours for seven days a week),” he said in an interview.
Outside of Cebu, Natumulan and Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental have the largest number of residents served by PWRI.
Some 900 households in the area are enjoying stable potable water supply. (MMM)
