Friday, November 16, 2007 Speak out: Governor and male chauvinism By Alvin John Tan
I COMMEND Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia for walking out of the bikini show at the Boljoon town fiesta.
Our governor stood up against the "normal" and "modern" time the world has come to be, especially against local television noon time shows that “preach” to our youth and the Filipina ways on how to be respected less in many parts of the world by showing women dancing while wearing lusty bikinis.
It is about time we realize that one of the problems we face today and which affects our economy and attitude is male chauvinism.
Filipino men tend to think they are superior to women; in fact, majority of our men are lazy, drunk and extremely violent.
This is in contrast with our women, who are more educated, skilled, patient, and hardworking even though they also fall victims to the men in their lives.
Our men are dependent and irresponsible, unaware of the sufferings our women bear not only at home but also around the world.
I would like to see more men who do the laundry, cook and wash the dishes and clean the house rather than kick his shoes away and lie in the sofa with his remote control, or sit down with his barkada in the tindahan, waiting for his wife to make "pulutan" for him.
May the fight for women's rights and awareness continue.
May our women earn more respect, and God Bless our governor.
