Friday, November 16, 2007 Sisos, Lagman get break in City Olympics
TOP Cebuano junior netters leaving next week for Malaysia heaved a sigh of relief after learning yesterday that they could still compete in the Cebu City Olympics set to open tomorrow.
Bernardine ‘Niño’ Siso and sister Sally Mae, who will be representing University of San Carlos in Unit VI of the City Olympics, and Jacob Lagman of St. Benedict Childhood Learning Center will be leaving Cebu for their Malaysian tilt on Monday.
They were, however, in a bind as their City Olympics and Malaysia schedules overlap and they needed to choose which one to prioritize.
“The City Olympics is important because this is the qualifying for the Cviraa (Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association), while Malaysia is also important most especially for Niño because this will be his last year,” said Sally Siso.
The Malaysian tennis tilt features tournaments in the 10-Under, 12-Under and 14-Under age groups. It is a four-week competition where players from all over the world travel in four of Malaysia’s huge cities to compete
The City Olympics, on the other hand, will start competitions in 20 events tomorrow until Sunday and will be continued in the next weekend.
Siso’s worries were wiped away after receiving news from City Olympics tennis director Carmelita Bala.
“We will make sure that we will finish their divisions this weekend,” said Bala,
For his final year in the Malaysia tennis circuit, Niño is doubling his efforts to come up with his best finish in the international competition.
Apart from his daily training, Niño also competed in a commercial competition last weekend at Baseline.
“He was invited to join. We did not give it much attention and we did not know that a lot of people were watching and waiting for him to arrive,” Sally said.
Niño played with an older foe, Roy Dinopol, whom he defeated via tie break, 7-5.
“It was different for him because he went up against a much experienced player. It was good because it served as his tuneup match,” Sally added. (MCB)
