Speak out: Being popular By Atty. Rosendo T. Brillantes
MODERN information technology is simply amazing.
In Philippine politics, it is magical.
It plants into the minds and hearts of people the names of celebrities, stars, critics, anchors, agitators, rabble rousers and personalities.
During elections, such popularity will ensure their ascendancy over other names.
With too many candidates running in an election, the popular ones have the advantage.
Ability, qualification, governance, experience, management style and scope of knowledge become irrelevant.
But voting for popular candidates has always been the practice, right or wrong, good or bad.
It is an engrained habit reinforced by information technology.
In a way, it can be said that those who control information technology control the outcome of the elections in the local up to the national level.
That is the reality, undesirable, repugnant and rotten it may be.
For candidates, then, it is a good idea to “swim with the tide.”
As Mao Zedong, while on the run from the Kuomintang army, said: “So long as you can swim with the people, you can survive.”
