3 Cesafi teams to join VAAA; games start Sunday

THREE member-schools of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) formalized their entry to the Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA), which is set to open on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Reportedly, the ban on Cesafi schools from joining VAAA was allegedly lifted during an emotional board meeting last Thursday. This, however, was neither denied nor confirmed by Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, who decided to inhibit himself from the meeting.

No one present in the meeting would also comment about the discussions to confirm the lifting of the ban.

Yesterday, Southwestern University and University of San Carlos, were given the go signal by their respective university presidents Dr. Eligario Gonzales and Fr. Rod Salazar, that they could join the competition.

University of the Visayas, on the other hand, had earlier confirmed its participation despite restriction given by Cesafi. UV president Eddie Gullas will be the guest in the opening this Sunday.

This will be UV’s first time in the league. It was, however, not given a schedule yet as it is still in Manila competing in the Collegiate Champions’ League.

Despite the reported lifting of the ban, defending VAAA champion, University of San Jose-Recoletos will still not join the competition.

“USJ-R admin already made a decision and want to maintain the stand they gave earlier,” said a source.

With USJ-R out of the picture, the title is up for the taking. Other Cebu teams taking part in the regional event are Salazar Institute of Technology and Asian College of Technology. (MCB)
