ALA Gym, the stable where Z Gorres and many others like him learned boxing, has cornered the right to promote the Gorres’ IBF super flyweight eliminator bout against Armenian-born Australian Vic Darchinyan.
Michael Aldeguer, manager of the ALA Boys, informed Sun.Star Cebu that they were able to convince the Australian hard puncher to come to the Philippines and fight in front of Cebuanos.
“It is now confirmed, we already got the contract and Darchinyan signed to fight here on Feb. 2 next year,” the young Aldeguer said.
Although the venue is yet to be finalized, the Aldeguers, including the country’s foremost boxing godfather Antonio, are very elated to stage the fight in our backyard.
“Gorres is ready to fight anywhere. But it is a very convenient development when Darchinyan’s camp accepted our offer and we did not have to go through with the bidding,” said Antonio.
“We are really glad that they accepted our offer, because it might be a little too expensive if we had to go to a purse bidding. Earlier, a consortium in Australia was planning to stage the fight in Sydney but failed to come up with a reasonable offer. So they accepted our offer instead,” Michael said.
As early as last Friday, Darchinyan’s manager Elias Nasser announced they had already accepted the offer from Gorres’ camp to fight here in Cebu.
Contract
But according to Antonio, nothing was definite yet since Darchinyan’s camp has not signed the contract.
Yesterday, ALA gym finally received the signed contract and the approval of the IBF championship committee for the staging of the fight.
“I am glad that everything has been placed together. At least now we can concentrate in preparing Gorres for this fight,” said Michael.
As part of his preparation, Gorres will fight an eight-round exhibition match on Dec. 8 against Indonesian slugger Jemmy Gobel in a no-holds barred duel. (RCM)
