Cebu, Lapu-Lapu survive hot games

THE Cebu City South and Lapu-Lapu City escaped with equally thrilling victories to jumpstart their respective bids in the 1st Cebu Inter-City Basketball tournament held at the Don Celestino Martinez Sr. Memorial Coliseum in Bogo City.

The Cebu City South banked on the hot games of Totong Villanueva and Harry Abayata to beat Talisay City, 96-94, while Lapu-Lapu City mastered all the hecklings to pull a tough 73-68 come-from-behind win over the host team Bogo City.

The tournament, a pet project of BAP-SBP Cebu provincial chief Lorenzo “Chao” Sy, received a positive response from the Bogohanons who are expected to throw more support with four more home games to play.

With Villanueva and Abayata keeping the scoreboard lighted for the Cebu City South players, the combined efforts of Raymund Tabar, Leo Dale Caparas, Maiko Seguerra, Ican and Arvie Cabañero fell three points short from the victory.

As of press time last night, the Lapu-Lapu City Chiefs were shooting for their second win as they host Toledo City at the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Complex.

In the main game, Lapu-Lapu City proved too tough for the host as Jessie Morata and Dinnes Pajares scored 16 and 10 points, respectively, for coach Larry Villanil’s first win.

Jun Ace Ursal and Michael Balili topped Bogo with 19 and 14 points each.
