CIE fencers take 2 medals in Manila Novice contest

CENTER for International Education fencers pulled off a 1-2 finish in the recently concluded National Novice Fencing Championship at the Philippine Sports Commission Fencing Hall in Manila.

Teammates Joachin Dompor and Kyle Alo advanced to the finals of the men’s individual foil event, which ended with Dompor winning the title.

“Great poise, good form and strategy, matched with good footwork paved the way for his (Domor) win,” said head coach Angelo Angel of Cebu Fencing Duellers Center.

Losing to Domor was not a bad thing for Alo as he still went home with the second place diadem.

Dompor and Alo had to weather 30 other participants from University of the Philippines, University of St. La Salle, Xavier University, Far Eastern University, University of the East.

There were also more than 20 participants in the women’s division of the novice contest.

The tournament was staged by the Philippine Amateur Fencing Association. Dompor and Alo were joined by Jim Cano, Micah Barker and Nichelle Cambal in the CIE team.

Although he failed to win a title Cambal was able to snag 12th place in the national ranking. (MCB)
