Tuesday, November 20, 2007 Unsung heroes, sister act shine in City Olympics
THE first weekend of the Cebu City Olympics came to a close last Sunday and those expecting to step up, did their jobs.
Aside from the usual achievers, there were also little-known heroes who cooked up surprises and made their own contributions matter for their schools, or for the City Olympics, their units.
As the first two days of the multi-event meet rolled by, swimmer Anthony Linn Navarro of Cebu Eastern College was the sole reason for making Unit 3’s presence in the winners’ column.
Navarro placed Unit III or Guadalupe District in the winner’s podium after registering four gold medals.
Navarro won the 50-meter and 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle. He also teamed up with Pedro Ramirez, Isaias and Israel David to win the 200m freestyle relay.
Aside from the four golds, Navarro also won two silver medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly.
Winning all the golds for the team is almost at the same level as winning the only gold medal for the team.
Unit 1 barged into the winners’ circle in the elementary division all because of the one-man effort of Charlie Villahermosa.
Villahermosa won the only gold for Unit 1 in the first weekend of competitions as he topped the boys 110m hurdle in the track event.
For the secondary division of Unit 2 or the Central District it was Claudine Candia, who slipped into the hero’s shoes.
Candia won the unit’s only gold medal after she topped the 200m butterfly swimming event. Winning seems to be in the Candia’s bloodstreams as her sister Kysia, was one of those responsible for their elementary division’s current lead. Kysia won three golds in swimming.
In the collegiate level on the other hand, Cebu Normal University joins the other gold medal winners after its table tennis team took the overall plum in the women’s team competition.
The competitions will continue this weekend for the final stretch of the meet to be held in different venues. (MCB)
