Wednesday, November 21, 2007 Speak out: Moving forward By Jesus Sievert
THIS is not about a dance step. This is about the pathetic state of movement of the country that until now has not changed its tempo since people power ousted the dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Be the leader at the helm is a plain housewife in Cory Aquino, a professional soldier in Fidel V. Ramos, a movie actor in Joseph “Erap” Estrada or an economist in Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, this country just reels from one dismal problem after another leaving us all confused, debilitated and wobbly!
Could this be the reason why we can’t focus on doing things right?
Perhaps, everyone can still remember FVR’s ambitious slogan boldly printed on the roof of school buildings that said “Philippines 2000.”
Or Erap absurdly fantasizing his, “Angat Pinoy 2004,” ubiquitously found in overpasses, skywalks and even in some corner street billboards.
Nothing beneficial was reaped from these notices. It remained but catchphrases and wasted paints.
But here we are in 2007 already, still doing the same pitiable steps, and having all our hopes and aspirations entrusted on GMA, a foreign trained economist, to pull us out from the throes of political, social and economic problems, yet to no avail.
Why can’t we move forward slowly but surely? What does it need to sustain these two steps onward? How come a relapse of every kind has to happen every time a momentum of moving ahead is being established?
Supposedly, it does not take much to keep the country going steadily forward. It simply needs the consistency of resolve for our leaders in creating all over the country a climate of peace and stability and implementing good and effective governance.
It is nothing less than upholding with vigor the integrity of people and country to breed respect and admiration.
