RP to play in Causeway scrabble

AFTER finishing 59th in the recently concluded World Scrabble Championship in India, Teodoro Martus, Jr. this time will vie for the Causeway Scrabble Asian Challenge in Johur Bahru, Malaysia set on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

The four other countries with five team members representing their respective countries, which will be hosted by Malaysia, are Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and guest country Australia, which is the defending champion.

Martus will be accompanied by RP team members Atty. Carmela Odette Rio who recently finished 27th in the world ranking; Marlon Prudencio, an Overseas Field Worker in Singapore; Oscar Rivera of Binangonan, Rizal province; and Robbie Oñate from Nueva Ecija.

Martus said Oñate took the place of Engr. Ronald Credo, who finished 69th in the world scrabble tournament, after the latter declined to join the said tournament after having encountered some financial difficulties.

Nine countries will be joining next year’s tournament.

Martus said that the toughest team to beat is the defending champion, Australia and their runnerup Malaysia since they have Ganesh Asirvatham who came in the second spot behind the 2007 world scrabble champion Nigels Richard of New Zealand, and world number 12 Suanne Ong.

“We will try our best to be on the top 3 and possibly the champion”, said Martus. (NSM)
