‘Pacquiao scared of me’

JUAN Manual Marquez thinks Manny Pacquiao—the scourge of Mexican fighters—is scared to face him.

The World Boxing Council super featherweight champion said Pacquiao is afraid of him because Pacquiao hasn’t committed to a fight. He challenged the Filipino hero to finally face him.

“I always said that the Filipino fighters are similar to the Mexicans with their never-say-die attitude, but now Manny (Pacquiao) has disappointed me and will disappoint all his fans around the world. He’s coming up with many excuses for not wanting to fight me,” said Marquez in a report posted at philboxing.com.

Both boxers are winners of their last matches. Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KO’s) won against Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KO’s) and Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KO’s) defeated the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera (63-6, 42 KO’s). Both fights were also decided by unanimous decision.

Pacquiao has also won his last six fights, with his last defeat during his first encounter with Erik Morales (48-6, 34 KO’s), while Marquez has won his last four matches.

Marquez said he has done everything to make this fight happen but a rematch is still unsure.

“What’s wrong with Pacquiao? First of all, he complains about the weight class and I compromise to face him as high as the lightweight division. Then, he comments that the money was an issue, and I responded that wasn’t a problem, I’m willing to take a pay cut to please the fans. Pacquiao also commented that he rather challenge for the lightweight title. All this is an indication that he’s really scared, and doesn’t want any part of me. He knows I’m the only man who can beat him, I’ll destroy him,” said Marquez.

Pacquiao downed Marquez thrice in the first round in their first fight in 2004, but the Mexican managed to come back and salvage a draw.

No choice

“Honestly, I believe that Pacquiao knows I’m the only one who can beat him. He has no choice but to avoid me. Doesn’t he want to be a champion of the world? If he really believes he is ‘The Mexican Killer’ then he needs to fight me and prove it once and for all. I have millions of Mexican fight fans who think I’m his worse nightmare.

Be a man!!! We both know that we have a score to settle,” Marquez said.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will be shooting a Nike commercial with other top athletes in the US and will be having thanksgiving dinner with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in Las Vegas. During the dinner, they will discuss who his next opponent will be. (EKA)
