Sunday, November 25, 2007 RP nears first leg sweep in Malaysia tennis
THE Philippine team, beefed up mostly by Cebuano junior netters, is one step closer to totally wiping out home bets in the Selangor International Age Group Champions.
Yesterday, two more won their respective singles competition, while the rest of the Cebu delegation will be playing in the championship rounds today.
Marian Capadocia grabbed a gold medal in the Girls 12 division after trouncing Alyssa Boey, 6-0, 6-3. Crissian Kintanar, the Milo Little Olympics Most Outstanding Athlete, later added another gold for the Filipinos following a hard-earned 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Delizavernne Singh in the Girls 10 division.
These are the second and third medals for the Filipinos in the first of the four-leg event, with the first one won by Sally Mae Siso in the doubles competition the other day.
Sally of the University of San Carlos South Campus is well-rested coming into her Girls 14 finals today against her doubles partner Theiviya Selvarajoo.
Final round
Sally’s older brother, Niño, on the other hand, will also be playing in the final round of the Boys 14 following an easy 6-1, 6-0 bashing of home bet Tan Wei Shen. He will be facing another Malaysian Kevin Loke in today’s final round.
Jacob Lagman, on the other hand, placed himself as an entry to the final round of the Boys 12 division after serving the upset axe on second seed Izzul Aizuddin of Malaysia, 6-0, 6-4. Lagman, who is only seeded fourth in this competition, is set for a tall order as he faces top-seed Duzbionjit Singh today.
Vince Marc Tabotabo, on the other hand, defeated Tan Zy Zinyang of Malaysia, 6-0, 6-2 to arrange a finals showdown with Chin Yen Ton in the Boys 10-Under.
In the doubles event, Tabotabo, who is from Tuburan and is now studying at Jose Rizal University, and Bio Talha won over Chin Yen To and Tazhu Zinyang, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to book a finals outing with Afq Irfan and Adeep Zahar. (MCB)
