Tuesday, November 27, 2007 CCPO goes after motorists who don’t wear crash helmets
MOTORCYCLE drivers and passengers must wear helmets.
Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patrocinio Comendador is serious about his campaign.
He sent a team of motorcycle policemen to apprehend traffic violators and to give special focus on police officers who don’t wear their helmets while driving motorbikes.
Comendador said police officers needed to set a good example and that driving motorbikes without helmets did not portray the image of a sincere police officer.
“I just thought of it because there were many complaints that police officers are number one violators,” Comendador told reporters yesterday.
He said the complaint has been raised during forums he attended and that he himself has noticed police officers in complete uniform riding motorcycles without helmets.
While the seven-man team led by SPO1 Junivan Villanueva will be apprehending all traffic violators, Comendador said they will not be lenient when it comes to offenders who happen to be police officers.
Comendador said he already sent memorandums to other police offices and national support units, including the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 regarding his campaign.
He added that once a citation ticket is issued to a police officer, this is enough to file an administrative case.
He explained that a citation ticket is proof that a person has violated the law and is sufficient to file an administrative case against a police officer.
SPO1 Villanueva, for his part, said they will have to explain to colleagues who end up being apprehended. (MEA)
