GK, Capitol to build ‘biggest village’

GAWAD Kalinga (GK) and the Cebu Provincial Government will build the biggest GK village in Cebu in Minglanilla town.

GK and Provincial officials will be at Barangay Tungha-an, Minglanilla today for the groundbreaking ceremony of the 9.4-hectare Province-owned lot to be used as the site for the 13th GK village in Cebu.

This is the biggest GK village in Cebu to date, said GK provincial coordinator Danilo Lagahid.

The drainage constructed by the Aboitiz group of companies will also be turned over to the partnership of GK and the Provincial Government.

Lagahid said building the village will start in the first week of December. At least 700 families will benefit from the village.

But Lagahid said 150 houses will be built in a year through Lexmark, which will sponsor the building of 300 houses.

The village will consist of houses, a multi-purpose hall, a medical clinic, a school and a basketball court.

Over two hectares will also be used as a farmland.

“This is to ensure that beneficiaries will also have food on their tables,” Lagahid told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Beneficiaries are informal settlers from Barangays Banilad and Sto. Nińo in Cebu City.

Lagahid said they would have to make a profile of the beneficiaries, though, to confirm that they are indeed poor.

Lawyer Rory Jon Sepulveda, Capitol consultant on information and revenue generation, said beneficiaries are occupants of Province-owned lots but not those affected by Provincial Ordinance 93-1.

“They are occupants of provincial lots who manifested their intention to relocate. The project aims to address the problems sa pagkawalay balay (homelessness),” Sepulveda told reporters yesterday.

The consultant also explained that the GK village sponsored by the Province is “hi-tech” and “eco-friendly.”

The Province will work on solid waste management and sewage system in the area.

GK aims to build 700,000 houses in 7,000 communities in seven years in the entire country, dubbed as GK 777. It was established in 2003. (JGA)
