Junior netters keep unbeaten run in 2nd leg

DESPITE a tough draw, the Filipino junior netters in the Penang Open International Age Group Tennis Championships 2007 stayed in contention as they advanced to the next round in their respective divisions yesterday at the Universiti Sains Malaysia tennis courts.

The diminutive Vince Marc Tabotabo of Tuburan led the carnage as he entered the final round of the Boys 10-Under in style.

Tabotabo, who is now suiting up for Jose Rizal University, dropped the upset axe on top-seeded Korean Sim Sung Been, 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals after drubbing another Korean, Jeon Seonglo, 9-4, in the quarterfinal round.

Today, Tabotabo, who is supported by Vice Governor Greg Sanchez Jr.and coached by Prospero Ruellan, hopes to extend his giant killing way as he is up for another tough task in the championship round against Korean Hong Jin Wong, who is the second seed in the competition.

Tabotabo also booked a ticket to the semifinal round of the doubles division. Tabotabo and partner Christian Lopez of Davao City defeated Singapore’s Ashto Toh Jin Hong and Talha Rahzan, 9-3, and Chin Yen Tong and Tan Zu Zinyang, 9-6, in the quarterfinals.

They will take on Yong Jir Isaac and Kazuki Nakamura of Japan today.

Jacob Lagman, on the other hand, moved to the quarterfinal round of the Boys 12 class.

He first blanked Japanese netter Ogini Seiya, 6-0, 6-0, before evicting Sean Yip U-quan of Malaysia, 6-3, 6-1, to move to the quarterfinal round. He will face either the player from Malaysia or from Korea in the next round.

Bernardine Niño Siso also remained in control in the Boys 14 division, which had the most number of entries.

Siso of University of San Carlos South Campus first defeated Seng Cheh of Malaysia, 6-2, 6-2, before flooring Ahmad Nazril Bin Saarani, 6-1, 6-0, during yesterday’s third round in the upper bracket. He joined the other surviving players today for the quarterfinal round battle.

“He will be going up against Kevin Loke next, who is a strong opponent,” said Niño’s mother Sally. Niño, however, has the upper hand on Loke, whom he defeated in the final round in the last leg in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Sally Mae also entered the quarterfinals after defeating Sharifah Shafina, 6-3, 7-5, while Davao’s Marian Capadocia defeated Malaysian Nur Nadja Risya Binti Rohaiza, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round and Korean Lee Eun Ji, 7-6(3), 6-0, in the third round to book a ticket to the quarterfinals.
