THE local AIDS Council has set different activities in observance of World Aids Day (WAD) on Dec. 1.
A motorcade will be held in Cebu City, starting at the Department of Health 7 office on Osmeña Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The motorcade, which kicks off the observance, will be followed by a short program at E-mall activity center at 10 a.m. to 12 noon. It will be followed by a press conference.
The council will also hold a series of symposium on HIV/AIDS prevention in different workplaces, public schools and barangays in Cebu City for the whole month of December.
WAD is observed every Dec. 1.
It is the only international day of coordinated action against the spread of HIV and AIDS, where 189 countries will commemorate in order to draw attention to the worldwide threat to public health that is posed by the AIDS pandemic.
This organized effort is designed to encourage public support, develop programs to prevent the spread of HIV and to provide education and awareness on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Theme
This year’s international theme, Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise–Leadership, relates directly to the UN Millennium Development Goals.
The theme also signifies an appeal to the government and policy makers to ensure that they will meet the target in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
In Cebu City, part of the local response that the City Government has initiated was the creation of the Cebu City Local AIDS Council, the central advisory, planning and policy making body for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS.
To achieve this monumental task, the Local AIDS Council conducts a series of information, dissemination on HIV/AIDS prevention in different barangays, entertainment establishments, workplaces and schools.
