Friday, November 30, 2007 Innovations at CPDRC earn Galing Pook nomination
THE innovations that the Cebu Provincial Government introduced in managing the provincial jail gained the attention of the Galing Pook Foundation.
Cebu Province is among the 19 finalists for this year’s Gawad Galing Pook Award from 200 entries.
Dr. Emma Porio, secretary-general of the foundation, and Eddie Dorotan, executive director, met with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday and visited the jail for a site validation.
Porio said they give recognition to the innovations done by local government units on different aspects of governance.
They hope that such innovations will be emulated by other local government units.
Dorotan said that unlike in other parts of the country where jails are congested, Cebu has provided a good facility for its inmates and implemented programs that will improve their lives even if they are in jail.
Before Garcia’s administration, these inmates used to stay in a dilapidated and congested jail along M. J. Cuenco Ave.
The dancing inmates of CPDRC have caught the attention of many.
But aside from their dances, Capitol has also introduced livelihood programs like bag-making, soap-making and dress-making.
Deposited
The inmates are making bags for an exporter and the proceeds are deposited in their bank accounts.
On Dec. 14, Garcia will do a presentation before the panel of judges that will pick the 10 winners of the awards from the 19 finalists.
Finalists
The governor said the Province is already deeply honored and being one of the finalists is already an achievement.
“We never aimed for this (award). We just did what we believe was the right thing to do,” Garcia.
The awarding will be sometime in January in Malacañang.
The foundation launched the award in partnership with DILG in October 1993 and has since recognized more than 200 local government units for outstanding and trailblazing programs. (MBG)
