Lapu ABC chief assured of new term

WITH no opposition among the 30 elected barangay captains in Lapu-Lapu City, Pajo Barangay Chief Leo Mercado is assured of another term as president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) and ex-officio member of the City Council.

The overwhelming support among Mayor Arturo Radaza’s allies for Mercado downplayed speculations that first termer Barangay Captain Rufo Bering of Canjulao will contest Mercado in the Dec. 29 elections.

Vice Mayor Mario Amores and Councilor Junard Ahong Chan, who are close to Bering, said Bering does not intend to contest Mercado for the ABC presidency because the latter has the support of the party.

Meanwhile, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation chairperson Liz Catagtag received the name plate pinned at the door of her office as souvenir and to signify the end of her
five-year term.

Amores turned it over to her during the council session last Wednesday.

In last Saturday’s awarding of the different fiesta committees, the City also gave Catagcatag a plaque and a copy of the resolution recognizing her work and contribution to the City’s programs for the youth.

Although the barangays are supposed to be non-partisan, opposing political parties in Lapu-Lapu have picked their own candidates.

Punta Engaño and Basak, which were the last strongholds of the opposition, lost to Radaza’s candidates.

Outgoing Punta Engaño Barangay Captain Angel Rodriguez said there never was a credible election in the ABC since Radaza took over as mayor of the city. (AIV)
