Thursday, December 06, 2007 USC alumni beats Cecaba for finals slot in MP Cup
THE SAN Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (Scbhaba) eked out a scary win over its bitter rival, the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba), to advance to the championship game of the 1st MP Cup Invitational hoops last Sunday at the USC-Main Gym.
Scbhaba pulled a 61-60 win to book the first seat, while the second slot was claimed by Team PacMan. Pacman whipped the Punta Princesa Sports Association (PPSA), 89-75, in the other semifinal.
Scbhaba and Team PacMan will vie for the P50,000 top cash prize in the knockout championship game this Saturday at the USC Gym. The first runnerup will take home P30,000, while the winner in the battle for third place between Cecaba and PPSA will earn P20,000.
Cecaba could have won the game but point guard Richard Lanutan got too cocky and his two back-to-back turnovers cost the Easternians the win.
Lanutan took an ill-advised jumper that missed the target at the 20-second mark, then after Edmund Odulio missed two free throws at the other end, Lanutan’s pass to Edvin Kaw with the time winding down went astray.
