Saturday, December 08, 2007 Blue Marlins plunge with 22 golds
THE Cebu Blue Marlin of the University of Cebu under coach Rolando Alvarez is currently in third place in the first day of the two-day swimming event after finishing strong yesterday in the ongoing 11th Negros Oriental Invitational Age-Group Governor’s Cup Swim Meet at the Gov. Lorenzo Teves Memorial Aqua Center in Dumaguete City.
The team collected a total of 22 golds, 11 silvers and 18 bronzes in the medal tally while the Silliman Swimming Club and the Negros Oriental Blue Dolphin are ahead respectively.
UC’s swimmer Noel Cañeda was the biggest contributor of the day after scooping five golds in the 200m Individual Medley, 200m freestyle, 100m breast stroke, 200m back strokes and the 400m freestyle events.
Contribution
UC team mates Renan Gabriel Tapang, Lyh Ann Navarro, Anthony Linn Navarro and Paula Abigail Vega also contributed pitched in three golds apiece in their respective events.
Tapang led in the 6-Under boys in the 50m breast stroke, 50m back stroke and the 50 meter butterfly.
Lyh Ann Navarro, on the other hand, topped in the 7-8 years girls in the 200m individual medley, 50m breast stroke and the 50m back stroke.
Anthony Linn Navarro reigned in the 200m IM, freestyle and back stroke for the boys 9-10. He also added silver from the 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 50m breast stroke.
Vega also dominated in the 200m freestyle and back stroke respectively, with three golds and two bronzes in the 200m and 400m respectively for the 15-17 girls.
Israel David and Beth May Arellano chipped in two golds for the Cebu Marlins.
David won in the 50m breast stroke and the 400m freestyle and also bagged three silvers for the 200m in the IM, freestyle and back stroke categories while Arellano came on top in the 200m and 400m freestyles and added two silvers in the 200m individual and back stroke, respectively.
Aimee Sanchez also snatched a gold medal in the 200 individual medley, two bronzes in the 200m back stroke and 100m breast stoke for the 18-years-and-over in the women’s division.
Records
Michael David Vega won 3 silvers in the 200 IM and back stroke and in the 100 breast stroke and collected 2 bronzes in the 200 and 400 freestyle while Robin Jakobsen also had silver in the 50m breast stroke and 4 bronzes in the 200m in the IM, freestyle, 200 back stroke, and the 400 freestyle.
Trina Cañeda in the 11-12 years girls of UC also won silver in the 400m freestyle and 5 bronzes in the 200m IM, free, back, butterfly and the 100m breast strokes.
Karen Indaya for the 7-8 years girls own a bronze in 50m back stroke while Anthony Navarro II also got one bronze for the 7-8 years boys. Arlette Baller also took with a bronze in the 100m breast stroke. (NSM)
